We’re very excited about the upcoming trip. Day one will be sometime in Summer 2018. While our path has not yet been finalized, Will has a rough draft he worked on during this school year. Our main destinations are out West. So much to see....so little time!
The following things are only a few of the many things we hope we’ll be seeing on this trip:
Glacier National Park
Space Center Houston
Alcatraz Prison
Zion National Park
Bryce Canyon National Park
White Sands National Park
Bottomless Lake State Park
Carlsbad Caverns
Route 66
The Grand Canyon

Please note that this is only a fraction of what we hope we'll be seeing out west and in Texas! We haven’t even mentioned any of our possible destinations in the midwest and the east in this post!

I've heard repeatedky that Zion National Park is equally if not more impressive than Grand Canyon. Might suggest looking into that.
I think what you're doing is fantastic. I've been talking with Ryan, my 11 year old, about doing something similar, so I'll be watching with great interest as you embark on this terrific adventure!

Looking forward to following along on your awesome adventure.

Hope you can see Sedona in Arizona. It’s beautiful and very spiritual.

I’ve heard Bryce Canyon is amazing!

Ash

We just returned from Acadia National Park in Maine and we'd strongly recommend that park, too.

Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Yosemite are amazing. Also, be sure to visit Muir Woods, the oaks are amazing.

Bon Voyage and look forward to hearing about the journey now that I have signed up for the Newsletter.

We went to Moab, UT last year and loved it. Arches National Park was particularly fantastic and we also enjoyed Canyonlands NP.

Great list of NPs. While Zion is great it does get very crowded!! Check out some of the stats online. There are some rurmors that they are going to require reservations soon... Definitely plan your visit off-season and mid-week if possible, and book your campground early. We stayed at Willow Wind RV park for part of our visit (close), but actually preferred Sand Hollow State Park (wide open, less commercial, but a little further away). Enjoy the hike up to Angels Landing but be very careful!

Definitely add Arches and Canyonlands to your itinerary - almost better than Zion. Stay in or around Moab - a fun town. We stayed at OK RV Park there. Not bad there and close to Arches.

Plan to spend more time in Bryce - at least a week and do as much hiking as you can handle. Stunning! We stayed at Ruby's Inn RV Park. Very nice and close. Recommend both sunrise and sunset hikes (naps in the middle of the day :-).

If you can catch both North and South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Great hikes around the North Rim!

Lots of good info on our blog as well. Questions welcome!

Ash, all of the National Parks you have listed and those added in the comments are excellent. You have probably read all of this already so ignore if this is repeat:

1) Bryce Canyon (and most of these places) should be enjoyed at night as well as during the day. The night sky at Bryce is supposed to be as good or better than any other place in the lower 48. It puts God's promise to Abraham in a whole new light...

2) Canyonlands National Park (a short distance from Arches / Moab, UT) is amazing even if just viewed from the visitors center. If only time for one park near Moab - I would go to Arches.

3) North Cascades National Park (visit between late June and September for open roads) is one of the least visited parks in America yet its only about 2 hours from Seattle. Incredible and unique jagged mountains of the North Cascades and Mt. Baker is very close.

4) Olympic National Park - not far from Seattle. Hoh Rain Forest is unlike anything you can see in the lower 48. Trees are 200+ feet high, more than 15 feet in circumference and the undergrowth so thick you could be camouflaged two feet off the trail.

5) If you are in Northern CA / Southern Oregon / Crater Lake National Park, a drive to Mount Shasta (visible for 150 miles either side of I-5 and just off the interstate and outside of the town of Mount Shasta) is an incredible experience. If you would like pictures from the summit, send me an e-mail : ) However, without gear you can easily hike in summer to about 9,000 feet for majestic views of the mountain that is more massive (but 200 feet shorter) than Mt. Rainier!

6) White Sands National Park - Phenomenal!

"Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?" Isaiah 40:12

Enjoy it!
